Gunshots rang out Tuesday evening in front of a popular hangout on Main Street, New Amsterdam and sent patrons diving for cover.
When the dust settled one man was shot and the gunman whom it is alleged is a licence firearm holder is in custody. According to information Dunstan Simpson, 35, of No 53 village Corentyne was shot twice, once to his chest and once to his left hand. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he remains warded.
About 22:50hrs on Tuesday, Dunstan Simpson, 34, of No. 53 Village, Corentyne, was shot and injured during an altercation with a licensed firearm holder at Main Street, New Amsterdam. The suspected shooter has been arrested and the firearm seized by the police as the investigations continue. According to one eyewitness a number of persons were in the vicinity of the popular spot which houses a number of popular businesses. He said that two men came up in a car and joined the gathering. A little while later, Simpson arrived on the scene.
After a while an altercation ensued between Simpson and the men. One of the men eventually emerged from the car with what looked like a chopper. Simpson it was understood moved away and returned with a set of bottles which he started to throw in the direction of the men. The altercation continued and one of the occupants of the car emerged with a firearm from which he discharged two rounds.
According to the eyewitness the altercation continued with Simpson raining bottles at the men. By then the crowd had scattered according to the eyewitness. More shots rang out and it was subsequently learnt that Simpson was shot. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he remains warded.
However, according to his relatives, Simpson, who buys and sells items, told them that he was at the nightspot with some friends when the men arrived and opened fire on him. He told them that he was involved in a relationship with a woman and the altercation was over the woman.
He told them that he was wounded by the men following an altercation.
It is understood that the suspect, subsequently reported to the station and told investigators that he was robbed by the man whom he shot. However he was arrested and placed in custody as investigations continue.
