The fierce rivalry for honours will resume when the nation’s top spellers convene for the Eid-ul Adha Open Scrabble championship, in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands this morning.
National champion, Abigail McDonald is currently preparing for the World Scrabble Championships scheduled for Prague later this year and will be anxious to participate even if just for the practice and to stay oiled in the championship mood. Should she participate, an interesting scenario will automatically develop.
Her predecessor, Fred Collins, will also be among the starters and he will also want to cart off the spoils. His vast knowledge of words has oft times stood him in good stead and he is always a threat to the top ranked players. The lower rated seeds cannot be ruled out as was proven over the past championships. Michael Benjamin had upset Gafoor but faltered against Kamta Ramnarine which cost him the top spot and he eventually had to settle for the second place slot. He will be keen to replicate or even better that performance while Wayne Cave, who has improved tremendously, will want to continue in that vein.
Devraj Deonarine had impressed when he was adjudged the best newcomer in the Nationals but was a bit out of form for several succeeding tournaments.
He returned with a bang in the last Open Championship and placed second, just behind Gafoor, to signal a return to form. Orlando Michael, who had been off the podium for quite some time also turned in a favourable performance in the last tournament which saw him once again among the elite players in the third place.
Additionally, the distaff group consisting of Lindener, Grace Hercules, Ruby Cummings and Prudence Edwards will attempt to overshadow their male counterparts which will set the tone for a fiercely contested tournament. Registration gets underway at 09:30hrs for a prompt start at 10:00hrs. Those players arriving early will be charged a fee of $500 with latecomers being penalized with a $200 increase. Further, clocks would be activated promptly at 10:00hrs. Players with clocks and boards are asked to have them at the venue at least half an hour prior to the scheduled start.
