– GBOC, YBG throws support behind event
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA)/Yolo Entertainment ‘Super Sevens’ Basketball Challenge will bounce off at the Burnham Basketball Court, October 27, continuing on November 3 and 4 at the same Parade Grounds venue.
A press release from Yolo Entertainment yesterday stated that registration for the tournament is ongoing and concludes on October 23. The ‘Super Sevens’ contest, which is Yolo Entertainment’s brainchild, has acquired major support from stakeholders including GABA, Guyana Basketball Officials Council and Youth Basketball Guyana.
“The novelty tournament will be of great benefit to the basketball fraternity as the format allows for all persons who play basketball to enter and have a chance to experience real basketball situations and have fun at the same time,” YBG’s Christopher Bowman reportedly said in the press release.
“I am sure that coaches of the established clubs will use the tournament to ‘spot’ new players and invite them to join teams. Our national youth Basketball team should also be back home from their stint in Suriname in time to participate,” Bowman reportedly continued.
Meanwhile, GBOC President, Cecil Chin, was also in high praise of the Super Sevens concept in the release. “The special rules of the tournament will certainly provide a challenge for our referees and great entertainment for the fans,” Chin said.
The special rules include three first division players per ‘Seven’, sixteen minute games, free shot penalties when the ball goes out of bounds, a bonus ball that will double points scored with it, special personal foul penalties and should a game be tied after the regulation time, it will be decided via free throw shootout whereby the captains of the teams will chose the shooters from the opposing team.
The first place team will receive $100,000 and a trophy along with team replicas; second place team receives $75,000 with trophy and replicas while third place gets $50,000 with trophy and teams medals; the fourth place team will get a trophy and participation certificates.
A special award will also be presented to basketball stalwarts Eon ‘Watusi’ Andrews and Mark Agard. There will also be prizes for fans and players alike. To date, Hinds & Statia Financial Services, HJTV & 94.1 Boom FM, Starr Party Rentals, Precise Printing and ONRM have come on board in support of the tournament.
