Commissioner of Police Leroy Brumell has requested that the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) investigate the recent shooting deaths of three Albouystown youths at the hands of the police.
Brumell said that he had “brought the OPR into the investigation” because of the controversy over the circumstances surrounding the case.
“I have brought the OPR into the investigation (and) I have asked anybody who has information to come forward,” the Commissioner told Kaieteur News yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that police have also been questioning civilians about the incident but have received little cooperation. While police insist that the men were armed, individuals claiming to be eyewitnesses allege that the suspects were shot after being ordered to lie on the ground.
Police allege that Jermaine Canterbury, called “Chow”, Mark Anthony Joseph, called “Two Grand”, and Romario Gouveia had opened fire on ranks who had confronted them, as the men were planning to carry out a robbery at the K&VC Hotel.
Canterbury and Joseph died shortly after being shot while Gouveia, who did not appear to have been seriously injured, succumbed on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. His relatives are appealing for an independent autopsy.
Police sources have said that the cops were tipped off that the youths were planning to rob a hotel guest who reportedly had a substantial sum of money.
Some Albouystown sources claim that an individual who fled the scene in a white vehicle is an associate of the slain men, and that the suspect is also from the community. Police have still not located the suspect or the vehicle.
In a statement on Sunday, police said that acting on information about a planned robbery on an occupant of the K&VC Hotel, South Road, Georgetown, they staked out the building last Saturday night. Police stated that around 20:30hrs, ranks observed the occupants of a car, bearing registration number PPP 8539, drive up and stop in Alexander Street. According to the statement, three men exited the vehicle and proceeded towards the K&VC Hotel.
“The police challenged the men who opened fire on them, and the ranks returned fire,” the statement continued, while indicating that two firearms and a wig were recovered from the suspects.
The police also said that all three youths were previously charged for robbery and were all on bail.
