– insists detained vessel and crew were in its territory
Upon the directive of President Donald Ramotar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, made contact on Friday with the Minister of External Relations of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Elías Jaua, to discuss the matter of the arrest of the RV Teknik Perdana by a Venezuelan naval vessel the previous day.
The Ministers have agreed that dialogue was essential in an effort to find a peaceful solution to this matter and to preserve the relations which had developed between the two countries in recent years. In this regard, they agreed to meet in the coming week.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan authorities are insisting that the vessel it seized and detained along with its crew was in fact in that country’s territory. The Foreign Ministry yesterday issued a note of protest to Guyana for oil exploration work.
According to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, “Trooper Bolivarian Navy Ocean Surveillance ‘Yekuana’ (PO-13) on Thursday at 17:00hrs detected and intercepted the vessel, which was, “in maritime space corresponding to our Exclusive Economic Zone.”
The Venezuelan authorities said that they were of the opinion that the vessel which left Port Georgetown two days earlier was illegally operating in its territory.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said that the vessel was carrying out scientific research with the support of sensors (sonar), without authorization from the Venezuelan authorities
As a result the vessel was directed to discontinue the research work and was asked to accompany the Venezuelan authorities to dock Morro Valdez, located on Isla Margarita, Nueva Esparta State.
The vessel, according to the Venezuelan authorities, arrived at the dock yesterday morning at 06:00 hours.
They said that this was done in order to make appropriate inquiries under the International Maritime Law (DIM).
It was further stated that “the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expresses its deep concern about the way in which foreign vessels authorized by the Government of Guyana burst without due authority in the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone of Venezuela”.
“The Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela invites the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guyana to provide a satisfactory explanation for this disturbing fact,” says the note that was dispatched.
The Foreign Ministry said that “the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its commitment to peace and will not return to past situations of confrontation with the sister Republic of Guyana, as well as continue to persevere in the path opened by Commander Hugo Chavez to promote relations cooperation among peoples and strengthen the Latin American and Caribbean integration.”
