Shanella Webster, a newcomer to the sport, became the first female to win the prestigious 2nd Annual President’s Cup Golf Tournament on Saturday at the Lusignan Golf course.
She compiled a handicap of 36, net 78 and gross 62 to claim the victory. In second place was Chatterpaul Deo with scores of 15, 81, 66, third was Andre Cummings with 17, 83, 67, fourth Vijay Deo with a handicap 9, net 77 and gross 68 and the fifth was William Walker with scores of 7, 76, 69.
Walker also won the Best gross prize along with M. Dinanauth taking the Longest Drive and Patrick Prashad winning the Nearest to the Pin. Over 45 players, included five females took part in the tournament.
Minister of Culture, Youth & Sports Dr. Frank Anthony representing His Excellency President Donald Ramotar, who was unavailable to attend, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority Mr. Indranauth Haroldsingh, Vice President of the Lusignan Golf Club Mr. David Mohammed and public Relations Officer of the club Mr. Mark Bradford along with other members of the media were present at the opening of proceedings.
Mr. Haroldsingh in his briefed remarks apologized for the absence of the Minister of tourism Mr. Irfaan Ali and expressed thanks to the Lusignan Golf Club for again having this tournament on their calendar of events. He noted that the club over the past year has hosted some 34 tournaments and this he noted is a significant achievement for the sport.
Adding that the club has seen an improvement in membership with another achievement being more females has now been added to the membership.
Hon. Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony also echoed the significant increase in tournaments and sought for the partnership of the club and ministry to work in rehabilitating the access road to make the venue more accessible.
He noted that the club should now advertise their calendar of events to the major hotels since the sport now attracts businessmen and women on holiday and vacation here in Guyana.
Mr. David Mohammed Vice President of the Lusignan Golf Club expressed thanks to the ministry and H.E. President Ramotar in their second sponsorship of this tournament.
The traditional tee off was done by Dr. Anthony.
