The law enforcement arm of the Guyana Revenue Authority busted a 36-foot boat loaded with uncustomed goods early yesterday morning just off the Beterverwagting foreshore.
One of the agents said the boat contained more than 300 boxes of chicken with more than 12,000 pounds of the product. Each box contained 40 pounds of chicken which had been smuggled from neighbouring Suriname.
The duty on imported chicken is 100 per cent so the smuggler was trying to evade paying millions of dollars in duty.
The boat also contained two smuggled outboard engines and an unlicenced shotgun with ammunition. All day yesterday, those arrested were said to be cooperating with the law enforcement officers.
