The trend of visiting teams going into their opponents’ backyard and coming out victorious seems to be the recurring feature in the early stages of the Guyana Football Federation / Banks Beer 2013/14 Premier League which continued yesterday with a double header, at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara.

In the opening fixture, West Berbice-based Mahaica Determinators edged West Demerara’s Young Achievers 2-1 thanks to goals from Sherwin Hermonstine, who netted in the 6th minute of play and Quincy Holder’s strike in the 19th.
Young Achievers’ lone response came from Dexroy Adams, who fired in his goal in the 52nd minute of play.
The feature clash between hosts Den Amstel and visiting Grove Hi Tech was a scorching affair that ended 4-2 in favour of the visitors leaving the large turnout of home supporters disappointed.
After dominating the early exchanges, Den Amstel fell behind in the 32nd minute of play when a poor attempt to clear the ball from the goal area by one of their defenders off a from the left flank saw the ball deflect off his boots and sail past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Ryan Hunte, who through no fault of his was diving to his right to make the save.
Den Amstel had a clear chance to net the equaliser when a headed cross from just inside the penalty area eluded goalkeeper Seon Simpson and a host of defenders, but the opposing striker’s sidefooted effort landed over the crossbar much to the dismay of teammates and supporters.
The half came with no addition to the score and Grove Hi Tech enjoying a slim 1-0 lead.
Two minutes after the resumption of the second period, Den Amstel was subjected to more misery when goalkeeper Hunte in an effort to gather a dangerous looking cross parried the ball into the path of a lurking Domini Garnette, who made no mistake lashing home from close range to give his team a 2-0 cushion.
Orson Francios’s strike three minutes later put a real dagger into the hearts of the Den Amstel supporters as they witnessed their team fall three goals behind and showing no urgency to reduce the deficit.
Once again they missed another good opportunity to pull one back even though the entire Grove Hi Tech goal was to their mercy with the player hitting wide.
As if things could not get even worse, a quickly taken free kick from about 35 metres out which was awarded for an infringement surprised both defence and goalkeeper to end up in the back of the net and the visitors coasting to a comfortable 4-0 ascendancy.
However, Grove Hi Tech seemed to ease on the gas and Den Amstel playing more for pride than anything else managed to salvage some with two quick goals before full time.
The first came from a goalmouth scrimmage with Delon Lanferman bundling the ball over the goal-line in the 63rd minute to reinvigorate some amount of interest in the game and six minutes later Jeffrey Perreira crashed a powerful shot past Simpson after receiving a touch pass off a free kick.
With time running out, both teams made several substitutions with Den Amstel producing a ferocious assault in search of goals, while Grove Hi Tech was content on defending their lead and the strategy worked until the final whistle sounded to evoke celebrations among the small band of their supporters.
The results of the two other double headers will be made available in our next issue. Play in the League resumes next Sunday.
