After much speculation over whether or not the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships will be held this year, Kaieteur Sport understands that the championship will be held in November, ending the
doubt surrounding the event.
After prolonged deliberations between main stakeholders, The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education, the Championships will be held in November, after there was a consideration to host the competition next April, which caused some doubt over whether or not the competition will be held this year.
The ministry had reportedly expressed concerns about the time students and athletes spend out of school during this first school term and as a result, had proposed that the schools’ championships be shifted to early in the next term.
However, there were concerns from GTU that since Inter-House, Inter-Schools and Inter-Zones have already commenced in this term, the new idea would have disrupted two school terms and that would have been in effect deepening the ministry’s concern.
Hence, both stakeholders met and an amicable decision was taken to host nationals this term as usual and examine the changes following the 2013 completion of the event. Both the Ministry of Education and GTU are now working assiduously to host ‘Nationals’.
President of the GTU, Colin Bynoe, confirmed that the competition is on for November, stating that “Nationals is definitely on and we starting our preparations. Within the next week everyone will know when the dates will be,” he asserted. This year marks the 53rd year of the competition that brings together 16 Districts from across Guyana and 1700 athletes.
