– despite non assent to bills
The Ministry of Local Government is preparing for the local government elections despite delays in the assent of the local government bills.
Speaking with the press yesterday, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud, said that discussion have been recently held with newly installed Canadian High Commissioner, Dr. Nicole Giles, with regards to details surrounding the preparations for the local government elections.
Minister Persaud explained that while GECOM has the approval of the Ministry to host and display materials at the local government authority across the country, it would be premature of him to announce a date for the next local government elections without knowing the status of GECOM in relation to holding the elections.
He however touted the possibility of local government elections in mid 2014.
Persaud explained that as part of the electoral process for the elections, GECOM has already demarcated the 71 district boundaries and constituencies.
“Much of what we will discourse at our training programme with our counselors will centre on the legislation. Training and preparations for the Local Government elections continue.
“From around November 8, 2013 the Ministry of Local Government will seek to engage Neighbourhood Democratic Councils NDC across the country elected as well as appointed officers in clusters, discussing and deliberating upon the legal electoral environment in which the next local government elections will be held.”
The non assented bills currently sit in the office of the Attorney General.
Public Relations Officer of GECOM, Vishnu Persaud, explained that the commission could only require six months to prepare for the elections once the announcement is made by the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development.
He added that it is integral that the four Local Government Bills that have to be passed by the National Assembly and be assented to by the President before the elections could be held.
