…for robberies and illegal possession of firearm and ammo
Faced with two charges of robbery under arms and one charge of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition was 46-year-old fisherman, Gromyko “Boney” Gomes of Lot 6 River View , Ruimveldt.
When the charges were initially read to the defendant, he had pleaded not guilty.
The court heard that on October 4, last, Gomes robbed John Fernandez of $6.6 million which was being held by his security guard, Vincent DaSilva.
The second charge of robbery under arms alleged, that the defendant robbed DaSilva of a pistol, two magazines and 15 rounds of live ammunition.
It was further alleged that the defendant took possession of a Daihatsu motor car (PNN2145) which is valued at $2,000,000 as well as one gold ring valued $100,000; that he had on Robb Street, Georgetown, a .38 revolver and five rounds of .38 ammunitions.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that on the date in question, police chased after a suspicious Gomes who was rushing through Robb Street.
When Gomes was captured, the policed searched him and discovered the firearms and ammunition.
Gomes was subsequently arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
When the police officers arrived at the said station, DaSilva who was in the process of reporting his robbery immediately identified Gomes as the individual who had robbed him.
The complainant reported that at the access road to John Fernandes wharf Gomes, the tattooed fisherman and two other unidentifiable men, robbed him.
However, none of the items in question were recovered.
The court heard that the first robbery charge was dismissed since the virtual complainant testified that he could not identify who committed the said robbery.
However, the $2.2M robbery resulted in the defendant being fined $100,000 and sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment.
The father of nine was fined $100,000 for possession of firearms and ammunition and sentenced to a further 60 months’ imprisonment for each of these two convictions.
However, Magistrate Judy Latchman stated that the earlier sentences will run concurrently, they must be served immediately after the sixty months sentences for the robbery charge.
