In keeping with a stated promise to reward the 16 participating clubs and member associations currently involved in the 2013 /14 Guyana Football Federation (GFF) / Banks Beer Premier League, representatives of Riddim Squad and the Guyana Defence Force, winners on opening night of the competition received their respective cheques yesterday, during a simple presentation ceremony at the GFF Head Office, Section ‘K’, Campbellville.
Representing the GDF was Dwayne Moses, while receiving on behalf of Riddim Squad was Lloyd Millington and they both collected cheques from GFF representatives including President Christopher Matthias in the entity’s Boardroom.
According to Matthias, 50% of the gate receipts was divided between the four clubs that played on the opening night with the other two being Silver Shattas and Milerock, while the host Upper Demerara Football Association collected 30% and the remaining 20% went to the Federation.
The GFF President added that the objective of rewarding the clubs and associations is to ensure that they are both financially viable which will then result in further development of the sport at both levels.
Giving his thoughts on the first day of competition which was staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club, Matthias said the two games and the atmosphere were electrifying and to see the turnout out of fans, who came in their numbers, is a positive signal for the success of the League.
He thanked the Lord Almighty for blessing the day with brilliant sunshine and extended gratitude to the sponsor Banks DIH for partnering with the GFF to host the nation’s top League, while the support of the UDFA and the fans that came from Linden and other parts of the country came in for special mention.
Matthias said he expects the overwhelming support to continue as the matches move to other parts of the country and urged the residents in the communities where the games are scheduled, to come out and support since their attendance will translate into substantial returns to the clubs and associations which will then go towards future development.
He applauded the efforts being made by the respective clubs to lift the standard of play, while informing that teams have been preparing assiduously in every facet of their training and fans can expect some riveting rivalries.
The GFF Head revealed that the League will take a break on November 15 to allow for the staging of any of the yearend tournaments and the Mayor’s Cup and is scheduled to restart on February 2 with its culmination slated for sometime in March.
