A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the largest opposition faction in the National Assembly, was not invited to the recently concluded review by the Organization of American States (OAS) into Guyana’s compliance with the anti-corruption resolution it signed onto.
The confirmation came yesterday from APNU’s Leader, David Granger.
The OAS Mechanism for Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC) team wrapped up its mission to Guyana on Thursday.
Addressing media operatives at the party’s weekly press engagement, Granger was asked to comment on whether or they had participated in the recent ‘close door’ sessions.
“It seems that there were some infantile attempts to prevent certain agencies from meeting with the OAS and no formal invitation was sent to the APNU and I understand to GTUC as well,” said Granger.
The Opposition Leader felt that the move to prevent APNU from having a formal meeting with the team is quite astonishing, given that the party in the past had always had the opportunity to meet with international agencies.
The Opposition Leader cited, as example, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and international diplomatic representatives.
Granger pointed out that the OAS meeting was one that was handled by the government and “the government seem bent on preventing certain agencies from meeting with the task force.”
Apart from the opening of the forum, there was no attempt to allow the Opposition to meet formally with the task force.
“We are very disappointed with the government action, which I describe as infantile.”
Granger said that APNU will now be preparing memoranda which they will dispatch to the OAS.
On Thursday, the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) had also complained that it was sidelined from the meeting with the OAS team.
According to Lewis, “even though Gail Teixeira is Guyana’s representative, hers is not the prerogative when it comes to civil society to determine who comes before, or is heard by this body.”
Teixeira was tasked by Government with the responsibility to facilitate the three-day meeting.
