The body of a 49-year-old boat captain was yesterday discovered in his submerged vessel following a boat accident on the Cuyuni River in the vicinity of Kamaira Range.
The dead man was identified as Carey Persaud, of Four Miles Housing Scheme, Bartica.
According to a source, around 10:00 am, Persaud also known as “Cha cha” along with his bowman and several passengers were in a speedboat proceeding along the Cuyuni River when the vessel stopped to offload passengers.
The source added that because of the dangerous rapids that run directly dropping into each other, passengers would have to disembark from heavily laden vessels and walk around on a pathway on shore to either the top or bottom of a nearby falls.
While passengers got back on the boat, it was reported that the vessel came into contact with a rock. This is when tragedy struck.
Another source told Kaieteur News that after the accident the passengers then swam to safety along with the bowman until a passing boat rescued them.
Unfortunately, when the damaged vessel was brought up from under water, the body of Persaud was discovered with a life jacket still on. Based on reports reaching this publication, one of the straps on the captain’s life jacket became entangled with the steering of the 275 Hp engine and he was unable to free himself when the boat submerged.
Meanwhile, according to a knowledgeable source, the Kamira Range in the Cuyuni River should be a no passing zone for boats owing to its treacherous nature.
The source said “ the river can only be compared to what goes on in the Grand Canyon, USA, to give you a description ,but these operators using the slang “Pace and Power” would court danger and death daily”.
It was stated that in the early days a road was built on the northern shore of the river there for persons to use to pass by the area, and a skull and crossbones signs placed at the top and bottom of the Kamira Range.
In a press release, the Director General of Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) Claudette Rogers expressed her condolence to Mr. Persaud’s family.
“Any loss of life at sea is a blow to us” Rogers said. She also reminded individuals to adhere to safe boating practices by wearing life jackets to observe the rules of the sea.
The incident is currently under investigation.
