The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCY&S) Dr. Frank Anthony indicated at the conclusion of the MCY&S\NSC summer swim programme which was held earlier in 2013 at the National Aquatic Centre Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, that a warm up pool will be installed at the said facility; that pool is currently under construction.
Works currently on going at the warm up pool, National Aquatic Centre Liliendaal, while the area of concern (right) has been dug up to accommodate the adjoining base of the warm up pool and walkway.
The foundation work, which is ongoing, is being done by local company D and S Construction. A source close to the pool informed that as soon as the foundation is completed the Moitha Pool, a Company which is based in Germany will lay the steps, basin, deck etc. Kaieteur Sport was told that the pool will be similar to the current one with its deepest part being 2 meters and the lowest 1\2 meters. The size of the pool will be 20’x25’ and it will be used by beginners as well as other swimmers for warming up and training.
Kaieteur Sport was made to understand that swimmers who are currently preparing for the Inter Guiana Games were unable to train at Aquatic Centre recently and had to use the Colgrain Pool. But the usually reliable source indicated that it is not entirely safe to have swimmers train at the Aquatic centre at the moment due to the ongoing works. The source indicated that they want to maximise the use of the Aquatic centre and are hoping that the foundation will be completed quickly so that the German-based company can commence their part.
Meanwhile, one swimming enthusiast expressed concern over the construction so close to the foundation of the existing structure, but Kaieteur Sport was informed that they had to go close to the main structure due to the two pools will be closely linked. It was noted that no structural damage will be done to the existing pool.
