Speaker of the Surinamese Parliament, Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is expected to visit the local Parliament in the latter part of this month. Her scheduled visit was initiated by an invitation extended to her by Speaker of Guyana’s National Assembly, Raphael Trotman.
Kaieteur News understands that the development is in keeping with a commitment made by the erstwhile Speaker of the National Assembly, Hari Narayen Ramkarran, to invite the Surinamese Speaker
Geerlings-Simons, along with a delegation of 11, has accepted the invitation and will be visiting Guyana on October, 24-27.
Trotman is adamant that the nature of the visit should go beyond “merely meeting” with key members of the Government and the Opposition. He posited that it should formally establish a Guyana-Suriname Association to enhance relations between the two countries’ Parliaments and peoples.
Among the activities planned for the visit are courtesy calls on President Donald Ramotar, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Leader of the Opposition David Granger, Ministers of Government and the Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC).
In addition, the delegation will meet Members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Committee Members of the Parliamentary Management Committee and Members of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations.
