The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) will continue to operate on Saturdays from 07:00hrs to 11:00hrs. This is according to a GPOC press release issued yesterday which was contrary to what workers, and President of the Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers’ Union (GPTWU) Harold Shepherd, had told this newspaper on Friday evening last.
According to Shepherd, Saturday is not a normal working day, and the union had decided that GPOC workers will no longer work on Saturdays, in keeping with the labour law which states that persons are to work 40 hours a week.
Shepherd had said that GPOC workers are usually paid overtime to work every Saturday. He noted that GPTWU found that if overtime payments continue to 400-plus workers, the corporation will go bankrupt in a year’s time.
It was as a result of this that Shepherd said the union is doing the responsible thing by taking a stance, so as to ensure that GPOC employees not fall prey to a cash-strapped entity like those attached to the Mayor and City Council.
The GPTWU President had pointed out that the corporation does not operate on government subvention, and that the continued issuing of the overtime payments can result in the corporation not being able to stand its own expenses; including paying staff.
He had said however that the workers would continue to work on Monday, and will be reporting to work for the regular working hours during the work days -Monday to Friday.
Kaieteur News also spoke to a few workers who attested to the fact that the decision was indeed taken for them not to work. This newspaper was unable to make contact with Shepherd last evening.
However, he had stated in a prior interview that heads of government were informed of the Union’s findings, and according to him, “they said that they cannot afford to have them (GPOC employees) not work on Saturdays.”
The GPTWU president also noted that despite many requests, the corporation continues to operate at $40 per transaction, which is hardly lucrative.
“The last time it was raised was in 2004. We have been lobbying for an increase for a while, because many things have changed from then to now.” Shepherd also mentioned that there are many dilapidated post offices countrywide that are yet to be fixed.
