A seven-member United Nations team is expected to start a two-day visit Monday to assess what Guyana has done to implement measures to fight terrorism.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the experts from the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate will see several senior government officials as well as other law enforcement officials present during an opening session at the Guyana Police Force Officers Training Centre.
The Ministry said that visit will see the officials conducting “an assessment of Guyana’s efforts in the implementation of the United Nations Resolution 1373 “Anti-Terrorism: Calling for Suppressing Financing, Improving International Cooperation”.
Guyana has been under pressure to update its anti-money laundering laws which force banks and other financial institutions to submit mandatory reports and flag suspicious transactions.
However, two critical Bills have been delayed passage in the National Assembly after the Opposition sent it to a special committee to fine tune. Guyana has deadline of next month to pass the legislations or face sanctions.
Already, businesses have complained that their banking transactions are being affected with Trinidad and other countries writing Guyana for more information regarding the origin of the monies.
Coming to Guyana will be Weixiong Chen – Deputy Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED); Elisabeth Joyce – Section Chief, CTED, Coordinator of delegation; Sue Takasu – CTED Senior Legal Officer; Enrique Ochoa – Committee Expert from ‘1540 Committee’; Henrik Juhl Madsen – Associate Professional Officer, Maritime Security and Facilitation, Maritime Safety Division; Yuen Chi-Kin Luke – Interpol Officer and David Alamos Martinez – Terrorism Prevention expert, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
The two-day itinerary will commence with an address by Minister Clement Rohee.
