Dear Editor,
The town of New Amsterdam is growing rapidly and as such traffic has been a major issue. Many persons are now buying vehicles and the roads are becoming too congested for pedestrians. In the morning hours between 7 and 10, the traffic would normally build up causing traffic jams and several accidents. School children and workers would use the road, too, and sometimes it takes hours to get to where you are heading.
The same thing occurs from around 2 pm to 4 pm from Monday to Saturday every week. There are hardly traffic cops on the roads to control pedestrian crossing or stopping of vehicles. Sometimes when you want to cross the road you either wait for a lengthy period or run across the road. As such I am fearful for my life when using the main road.
Much more needs to be done to protect our fellow citizens, especially those who use the road daily.
More traffic signs should be erected and pedestrian signs should be painted regularly so that persons can identify the crossings. There should also be lights at these three main access junctions mentioned – Princess Elizabeth Road, Pitt Street and Philadelphia Street.
Let’s help protect the safety of our people in New Amsterdam where heavy traffic is concerned.
