– Wortmanville must win two in a row for title
Albouystown/Charlestown will look for a clean sweep tonight at teh Cliff Anderson Sports Hall against Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust in the Mackeson-sponsored Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters Inter-Ward Basketball Championships after comfortably winning Game One.
Albouystown blew out Wortmanville in the first game last Friday night, compliments of 40-plus points from Sheldon Thomas and tormenting offence from Dave Causway. Wortmanville could not find answer for the duo in the backcourt at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Tonight’s final puts the two toughest teams in the competition against each other in a feud that is extended beyond basketball. The urban conflicts of both ‘hoods’ will be live on the court tonight in what will be a gruelling contest for supremacy and bragging rights.
Albouystown has ensured that its hardcore supporters accompany them to each game, which will increase for the final. The tension and emotions will be high with referees in the centre to ensure that quality basketball is played throughout the game.
Collis Pluck has been a beast in the paint for Albouystown; he will get support from Nicko Fraser, Marvis Hilliman and Joel Ifill. The four players are a decent combination of ‘big men’ for Albouystown. Together with Thomas and Causway, Albouystown have proven to be a formidable force.
Conversely, Wortmanville has the swingmen that could play in the front court, then swing to the back court such as Naylon Loncke and Randy Richardson, which gives any defence headaches to guard, but Albouystown was able to shut them down in Game One.
Apart from Loncke and Richardson, there is Michael Turner, who has unleashed an unexpected superior brand of basketball at this level that has caught many off guard. Wortmanville looks like the more position-specific team on paper; they must play to that strength.
They have a pure shooter in Shawn Gillis to support the forward, swingmen and they have a true centre in Joslyn Crawford. Albouystown/Charlestown, characteristically, has not rolled over and given up anything against Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust that comes into tonight’s game forced into the underdog situation.
