A 19-year-old was yesterday brought before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he faced two charges – illegal possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without having a licence.
The unrepresented teen, Dexter Hopkinson, pleaded not guilty to both charges, the particulars of which stated that on September 29, at West Ruimveldt, he had in his possession one 9mm Kel-Tec Luger and ten 9mm rounds without being the holder of a valid licence.
The young man kept his head lowered as Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte told the court that he would be objecting to bail based on the circumstances outlined in police reports.
Prosecutor Hunte told the court that the defendant lives at Lot 152 “C” Field Sophia.
He said that on the day in question, at about 04:30 hours, police were on mobile patrol within the West Ruimveldt area when they noticed motor car HC 804 proceeding west in a very suspicious manner. The vehicle was stopped and the officers asked the two occupants to exit the vehicle.
The defendant came out of the vehicle with a black and red bag on his back and officers conducted a search. During the search, they discovered the said weapons as mentioned in the charge.
When an officer inquired about a licence from the defendant, he told the officers that he found the gun and the rounds which were lying on the ground in a backdam and he took them and was on his way to sell it.
The accused was then arrested and taken to Ruimveldt Police Station where he was later charged.
Hopkinson, who currently has a robbery matter before the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court, told Magistrate Latchman that he is a minibus conductor, despite court documents indicating that he is a labourer.
He was remanded to prison and is expected to return to court on October 23 for commencement of his trial.
