A South American man who was jailed for four-and-a-half years for couriering cocaine worth just over 220,000 Euros into Ireland has had his sentence increased to six years following a successful appeal by the DPP.
Leroy Sturge, originally from Georgetown, Guyana, pleaded guilty to possessing drugs for sale or supply at Dublin Airport on February 7, 2011.
On Wednesday, Chief Justice Susan Denham said the Court of Criminal Appeal found that the judge did not give sufficient weight to fact that Sturge, 51, had a previous conviction in the UK for the importation of cocaine. (www.herald.ie)
