In its quest to regain some level of supremacy at the senior level in Caribbean cycling, President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Cheryl Thompson, has disclosed that this nation will be represented by an experienced eight (8) member team (5 males 3 females) at this year’s Caribbean Cycling Championships (CCC) set for Curacao, October 19 – 20.
Seventeen (17) countries will be battling for supremacy in this year’s edition. A former top shot in the region, Godfrey Pollydore will certainly be bringing his experience to bear in guiding the other riders, young in age but with a fair level of experience. Alonzo Greaves has proven that he is undoubtedly primed to make it big at the next level having dominated on the local scene consistently.
Geron Williams, who is currently training in the USA, has been doing well in high level competitions in the Big Apple and the Caribbean, in particular, Trinidad and Tobago. Orville Hinds has been on the rebound this year, turning in some consistent top performances having also held the title of National Road Race champion.
The other male competitor is National Road Race Champion Raynauth Jeffrey who, despite being a young athlete in the sport, has already secured respect from the seasoned campaigners as a tough customer with some exhilarating wins to date including the title of National Champ.
Jeffery has also dominated for Guyana at the Junior Caribbean level graduating to the senior ranks this year, he was last year’s National Junior Champion.
On the distaff side, United Kingdom based Claire Fraser-Green will team up with the local duo of National Road Race queen Naiomi Singh and Hazina Barrett.
This is an experienced trio, having been involved in many local battles over the past few years, they will now be combining efforts to bring glory to Land of Many Waters.
The GCF has appointed former local and Caribbean champion Dwayne ‘Road Hog’ Gibbs as the Coach of the team which has been hard at training over the past few weeks. Brian Allen was appointed Manager.
Among the sponsors to date assisting the team, are the Guyana Olympic Association, Office of the Prime Minister, Colin Ming of Mings Products & Services, Church’s Chicken and DeSinco Trading.
President Thompson noted that she is very excited with the make-up of the team and is looking forward to good results from the riders. The Time Trials will be contested over a distance of 25-Miles while the Road Race will be 83-Miles.
The competing countries at this year’s CCC are Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Curacao, Dominican Republic – St. Domingo, French Guyana, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Suriname, The Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands.
