An ex-prison officer was yesterday sentenced to 25 months imprisonment after he received approximately $400,000 worth of clothing from a friend and used the proceeds for his own benefit rather than giving it to his comrade, as agreed.
Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan who presides at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court read the particulars of the charge, which stated that within the period of June 1 to June 30 at Albouystown, 27-year-old Quacy Collins of Lot 84 La Penitence Street, Albouystown, who is now a taxi driver, received a quantity of clothing worth $366,000, property of Merlin Mc Kay, also of Albouystown, and fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.
To the allegations, he pleaded guilty.
Court documents revealed that on the said date, the defendant told the complainant who was known to him for some time that he wants to get into the business of selling clothing. He was then given a quantity of clothing with the understanding that he would give the profits to Mc Kay within a two-week period and she would then give him part of the earnings.
However, the defendant, sold the items, and after obtaining the profits he was nowhere to be found.
The matter was reported and after investigations were conducted, he was finally caught, arrested and charged for the said offence.
Collins begged the court for time to repay his friend but his request was denied. He was then sentenced.
