Mackeson Brand Coordinator, Jamaal Douglas believes that the ongoing Mackeson Fight Nights initiative, which is community-based owed to its open-air setting, is continuing Ansa McAl goals of linking sport with demography that is crucial to development.
Mackeson and the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) had combined to return amateur boxing to Linden, where hundreds turned out two weeks ago to welcome back the sport to that community. The momentum continued in Georgetown last Sunday despite bad weather earlier in the day, but nevertheless, Douglas believes his goals were achieved.
“These fights are far more intense than indoors to me; I really saw some boxing. I think that is so because this is the outdoors and more people are seeing the fights; our boxers are looking to be in an impressive mode I believe because they know people are watching,” Douglas said.
He said that could not have been possible if they had not taken boxing to the people, which is the primary aim of the Mackeson Fight Nights. He believes that the encouragement from much more people outdoor will ultimately influence boxers to lift their game.
“I am looking forward to Berbice. Based on what I have seen in Linden and Georgetown, I know the final in Berbice will be much, much more intense with all the prizes on the line. This event is going to be very intense,” Douglas opined. The final is set for Saturday.
The Mackeson Brand Coordinator admitted that the project is still in its teething stages, but they will improve as the event grows. Douglas committed to hosting the Mackeson Fight Nights every year; based on the excellent response they have received to-date.
He said that not many corporate citizens will take disciplines that are not doing well and invest in them in meaningful ways, which could lead to ultimate development. Douglas said that is where his brand stands out, as well as his corporate leadership in sport.
The final stop of the Mackeson Fight Night in Berbice will feature four divisions that include the Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Welterweight and Middleweight Divisions. Each of the fights will last three rounds, which promises loads of fistic fury, in the street.
The competition is being held under the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) rules and all technical boxing rules will apply. Douglas said that he hopes the GBA will use this event, though inaugural, as a main catalyst for long-term development.
