Students and teachers of Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) in Berbice are now in mourning after a female teacher died on Monday evening at the New Amsterdam Hospital after being admitted to the institution earlier that day.
Shabiki Joseph, 36, a mother of one, of the Mayor and Town Council Housing Scheme was the form teacher of Form 5A and taught Information Technology (IT) and Food and Nutrition.
According to reports reaching this publication, the teacher had taken part in the annual Inter House sports held on Friday at the Edinburgh Ground, East Bank Berbice.
Sources say that Joseph was advised not to run having delivered a baby only 14 weeks earlier. Kaieteur News understands that during the race a teacher fell and Miss Joseph jumped over the teacher and also fell. She did not get up.
It was soon learnt that she was experiencing difficulties in moving. She was helped into the stands, before being placed into a taxi and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
It was determined that she suffered a fractured leg. However she was asked to return the following day to have her leg placed in a cast. After this was done her discomfort continued.
On Monday she started to experience severe abdominal pains and suffered bouts of ‘blackouts’. She was then admitted as a patient and remained there until she succumbed.
It was a somber mood at the school all day yesterday as students and teachers tried to come to grips with the loss of a beloved teacher and colleague.
Before going to TASS, Joseph, a graduate of the University of Guyana, worked at St. Therese’s Primary School and School of the Nations.
Headteacher Fenlon Fraser told the media that Joseph who started to work at the school in September 2012 was one of his better teachers who would be sorely missed.
“She loved a challenged and took one of the worst classes in the school and now it is considered as one of the best. She was one of the most committed teachers I have ever known. Sometimes the boys from her class will wait on her downstairs and as she arrives they will take her bag and find out about her evening… the baby, etc. Her entire class loved her.”
Miss Joseph was married last year. She leaves to mourn a husband and three-month-old baby. An autopsy is expected to be performed shortly.
