Thirty football referees were yesterday given a charge to diligently apply themselves to their tasks in order to achieve optimum results when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in collaboration with the World Governing Football Body, FIFA, and the Guyana Football Referees’ Council (GFRC) held the opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the Referees’ Assistance Programme at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street Georgetown, yesterday morning.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony was among a large group of officials which included, President of the GFF Christopher Matthias, FIFA representative, Peter Prendergast, GFF Vice President, Ivan Persaud, facilitator, Costa Rican Brown and Troy Peters who was the Master of Ceremonies.
Mr. Anthony delivered the keynote address and expressed appreciation to the organizing principals for their input in the organization of the function. He pointed out that such sessions are considered developmental in nature and aids in the sustenance in the skill mix. He urged the officiating group to take their training seriously while rising above biases and impartiality.
Minister Anthony belaboured the fitness theory while exhorting the referees to pay strict attention to this aspect of their training.
“Fitness is not an optional issue but should embrace a key aspect of your lifestyle,” exhorted the Sports Minister. He likened exercise activities unto participating in daily meals, “Just as we set aside time foe breakfast, lunch and dinner, so to must we realize the importance of setting aside special time for exercise activities,” urged Mr. Anthony. He further urged the referees to spread the word of the benefits derived from exercise activities. He urged them to continue reaching for excellence, “I really like what I have seen and heard here today but I urge you not to rest on your laurels but continue working hard,” said Mr. Anthony.
Earlier, Mr. Matthias reminded the officials that their roles are important to the development of the sport while reminding them to be principled and professional when making decisions and rulings. He also advised them to keep close tabs on their behaviour on and off the field. He also assured the officials that his executive will be there to support their objectives.
Mr. Prendergast thanked Mr. Anthony for gracing the forum and expressed delight that the top government official felt obliged to grace the function. He also urged the officials to work hard and cautioned them that the course will be more challenging with more sophisticated adaptations. “You will be required to open your minds to a fresh way of thinking during these sessions,” cautioned Mr. Prendergast. He also told the referees that they will be required to endured two grueling sessions on a daily basis.
Consequently, several affiliates were issued with special identification cards that will enable them to enter any activity under the aegis of the GFF. They include national coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover, former national player, Earl O’Neil and top former referee, now instructor, Roy McArthur.
