His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar and First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar have offered their congratulations to the athletes and management which represented Guyana successfully at the inaugural South American Youth Games that ended in Lima, Peru on Sunday last.
President and Mrs. Ramotar met up with Team Guyana at the Piarco International Airport on Monday night en-route to Guyana.
The President said he wishes to extend heartfelt congratulations to the Guyanese youngsters who represented the Land of Many waters with pride in Peru.
“I would like to say that I am very happy with the collective performances of these young athletes. They did our nation proud and I would like to let them know that we are very happy with their exploits.”
Guyana ended the 9-day competition which attracted youths between the ages of 14 – 19 years in 19 disciplines with 9 medals (1 gold 1 silver 7 bronze).
Despite the cold conditions, the young Guyanese sought to do their best among their peers at the inaugural Games which formed part of the sports programme by the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) for the Region which had the same range of ages as the Youth Olympic Games.
It was also held to strengthen the bonds of friendship, fair competition, ethical and other values.
Guyana was represented by 23 athletes and eight officials. The athletes participated in athletics (1 gold 2 bronze), boxing (1silver 3 bronze), badminton (2 bronze), table tennis, swimming, weightlifting and cycling.
Canoeing, kayaking, diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, wrestling, rowing, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, beach volleyball and sailing were also contested.
