Three persons are now homeless following a fire which ripped through their one- bedroom home at Lot 19 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara early yesterday.
The fire, which started about 01:00 am, quickly ravaged the one -flat building located in a yard with two other buildings. Luckily the fire only scorched one neighbouring building.
Those without a place to call home are Taemattie Neils, 39, her husband, Leroy Dixon, and their daughter. Neils and her husband operate a fish shop just a few doors from their now burnt out home.
According to information, the family was standing at the front of the yard when they heard a loud blast and within a few minutes, the entire building was engulfed in flames.
Yesterday, Taimattie Neils told Kaieteur News that she was standing on a bridge in front of her yard when she heard a loud explosion.
“We just come from the creek and I was standing outside with a family friend when the house burn down. I can’t say what happened. I just hear ‘pow’ and when I look I see the entire house in flames. We couldn’t do anything and it would have been impossible to save anything from the house,” a distraught Neils stressed.
A still shaken Neils pointed out that she could have been dead had she gone into the home earlier as she had wanted to do. “While I was talking to the guy (her family friend) I wanted to go home and bathe and sleep but he was just talking. It’s a good thing I continued talking with him.”
The woman is puzzled as to what could have set off the explosion stressing that her house did not contain a gas cylinder or any other highly flammable substances “I only have two bulbs in the house and a television and everything was unplugged. We does cook and do everything at the fish shop, only in the nights we does go there and sleep.”
A seemingly frustrated Neils said that she is heartbroken. “This is not the first time fire destroy my home. I was living at Lot 868 Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara when fire started on a mattress and burn down the house. Since then I started fresh but my house gone again with everything inside.”
Investigations are continuing.
