The Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI) handed over a cheque valuing GY$282,000 to Mr. Hilbert Foster, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday last. This amount covers the total cost/expenses of the 2013 Knockout 50-Overs Cricket Competition.
On September 21, 2013, the final cricket match was played and the Albion Cricket team proved victorious in winning the tournament. The Administrative Supervisor of BBCI handed over the wining prize and trophy to Devendra Bishoo, Captain of the Albion Cricket Team for winning the competition.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BBCI, Mr. Omadatt Samaroo stated that, “This is not the first instance that the BBCI has come on board to sponsor events of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club/Berbice Cricket Board and now BBCI has decided to become an Official Sponsor of both Clubs.”
The BBCI made a financial donation of GY$50,000 to the Club for its Charity Programmes for the Elderly and Less Fortunate, donated a trophy to the Club’s Annual Awards Ceremony 2012 for the Cricketer of the Year – 2011.
He added that in 2013 the BBCI has sponsored the Club’s Annual Tribute to Retired Teachers Programme on the eastern and western sides of the Bridge; donated two trophies for its 22nd Annual Awards Ceremony for the most committed player for 2012 and most promising player for 2012 and also donated 80 medals for the Tribute to Teachers and Students.
The company, he noted, decided to come on board mainly due to the fact that cricket in Berbice (East and West) has progressed and created a great attraction to Berbicians. “Also, it must be noted that the Berbice Cricket Board has done outstanding works in creating a pastime for youths thereby keeping them away from drugs and crime,” Samaroo stated.
The Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI), he added, not only plays the role of collecting tolls and facilitating vehicles crossing the Berbice River Bridge and vessels transiting through the Retractor opening and under the High Span but also, “discharges its corporate responsibilities and more importantly played an integral part in the development of education, sports, supported national events and made donations to charitable and non – charitable organizations in close proximity of the Bridge or in Region 5 and 6. The Company had also sponsored events in other counties and as far as the hinterland.” (Leon Suseran)
