Demerara Captain again led from the front with a wonderful all-round performance to spearhead his team to an exciting three wicket win against Berbice with one over to spare in their Pepsi Inter-County 50- over cricket encounter yesterday at Bourda.
The 26-year-old right-hander hit six fours and five sixes in a confident 72 to follow up his ton and Man-of- the match performance in the first round and helped Demerara to 252-7 in 49 overs in reply
to the 250-8 made by the visitors.
Barnwell retuned with the ball to snatch 4-59 despite a belligerent 72 from leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who clobbered four fours and two sixes and tried to rescue Berbice from 159-7 with a 63 run stand with Romario Shepherd who made 38.
Played in brilliant sunshine on a slow track and fast outfield, Berbice lost four early wickets but recovered somewhat as Devon Clements struck two fours in his 30.
But the 27-year-old Bishoo, who has played 11 Test matches, and Shepherd waded into the Barnwell and Kellon Carmichael, whose 10 overs cost 62 runs and produced a single wicket.
The host let Berbice off the hook as they went on an all-out attack. The last five overs cost 64 runs to give them a challenging total.
After the early demise of openers Trevon Griffith and Andrew Lyght Jr, Rajendra Chandrikar who scored 62, joined Barnwell and together they put on 117 for the third wicket to steady the ship.
Derwin Christian who made an unbeaten 29 and off-spinner Shaquille Williams
then kept their heads to see Demerara home.
With 10 needed from 12 balls Williams smashed fast bowler Keon Joseph for an exquisite square drive four and finished the contest in the penultimate over with a disdainful cross batted shot as he danced down the track to the lively Joseph.
Berbice, who will lose left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and batsman Shemron Hetymer to the West Indies under-19 team, play Essequibo in the final preliminary round at Bourda tomorrow from 09:15hrs.
