– Company’s expansion continuing apace
Despite being faced with numerous challenges that inundate our society, among which include the constant departure of skilled workers from these shores, limited technology, high cost of financing for research and development and more directly, the shortage of high quality scrap material owing to the lucrative export market, Brass Aluminium & Cast Iron Foundry (BACIF) has been able to withstand the aforementioned.
A company whose main area of business is producing engineering castings and offering machining and fabricating services to the major productive sectors in Guyana and the Caribbean, the entity recently took another quantum leap with the manufacture of forty-eight (48) units of masses totaling 8,800kg – eight of which weigh 1000kg – for the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS). This marks the second time that BACIF has been retained to produce the item, which according to Managing Director Peter Pompey is a significant achievement.
Located in West Ruimveldt, BACIF has been around for the past 30 years as a company, but was founded much earlier by the late Claude Geddes with its key clients coming from the sugar, mining and timber sectors.
Pompey informed that the entity has been able to procure business from Caribbean countries as well, and pointed to Jamaica as being one of those regional partners.
“Currently we are in the process of manufacturing two of the largest crystallizer worm gears for Jamaica and I can tell you that the engineering expertise that is required to ensure precision has to be of the highest standards,” he assured.
Another component that the company has recently embarked on is the production of fire hydrants that can be used in the infrastructural development currently ongoing within the country, especially in some of the new housing areas.
Pompey said the advancement of the hydrants will be fashionable and conducive for the local environment and will require minimal maintenance and a product that could be available in hardware stores across the country.
Quizzed on how the company has been able to remain viable in the industry, he pointed to the dedication of the staff and the painstaking effort of the management to uphold high standards as among the vital elements that have ensured its competitiveness in the sector.
