– three detained
A Tactical Services Unit police constable was gunned down at around 21:00 hrs last night, after he stepped out of his North Sophia home to speak to a man who claimed he was there to see someone.
Michael Cumberbatch, 29, of Lot 111 North Sophia, was reportedly shot twice at close range near his front door. He succumbed despite efforts to rush him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Kaieteur News understands that police have detained three North Sophia residents in connection with the policeman’s death. A source said that one of the suspects is a close friend of the alleged gunman. This suspect’s son is also in custody.
Detectives believe that the gunman called out the fictitious name in an attempt to lure Cumberbatch out of his house. Relatives said that Cumberbatch, a father of two, was in his home when a man entered the yard, knocked at the front door, and began calling for ‘Quacy.’ Cumberbatch’s wife reportedly told the visitor that ‘Quacy’ did not live there.
However, the visitor reportedly refused to leave the yard, and this prompted the policeman to come outside. According to reports, Cumberbatch told the visitor “you ain’t hear no Quacy living here?” and ordered the man out of the yard.
The visitor reportedly responded by shooting Cumberbatch twice, before fleeing on foot. Residents reportedly assisted Cumberbatch’s wife in taking him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died shortly after.
Jacqueline Cumberbatch, the slain policeman’s mother, was unable to say if her son had a dispute with anyone.
But she alleged that a man fitting the killer’s description was seen in the area several times during the day and that the individual had been asking residents about the whereabouts of ‘Quacy.’
She told Kaieteur News that a female relative and a male companion had lived at the family’s house, but moved out some time ago. She was unable to say whether the male companion was the individual that the gunman was looking for.
Last night’s execution-style killing comes in the wake of similar murders this month.
On September 3, Kirk Davis, 31, was riddled with bullets outside his Eccles, East Bank Demerara residents during a confrontation with another man. That suspect has reportedly fled to Suriname.
On September 9, Sheldon Cheddie, 37, a former disc jockey, was shot dead as he sat with friends outside the Turning Point snackette at Tucville Housing Scheme. A suspect was apprehended and has been charged.
The very next day, Zulficar ‘Vicky’ Namdar, 27, was shot dead when gunmen invaded his family’s Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Bank Demerara residence.
One of the suspects was killed during a shootout with police and several suspects have been charged.

this is so sad….im afraid to visit Guyana
its seem that we Guyanese will have to arm ourselves to protect our lives ,My Sympathy to the friends and family and the force .
Maybe he is not a good police officer as one might think..investigate and you might surprise yourself”
I don’t trust any police in Guyana.
What is the government going to do about this policeman being killed? Come on, put a CURFEW IN PLACE and have the police patrolling all around the country to help catch these fu–king criminals when they come out to start doing their crimes. It seems that the government don’t care about the crime rate and the citizens of the country. May his soul rest in peace.
