Police are still to make a breakthrough in the murder of Diamond, East Bank Demerara business woman Sirmattie Ramnaress, who was found dead in her house on August 31 last.
So far, investigators have been unable to identify a suspect, although they have interviewed several persons, including Ramnaress’ reputed husband Collin Bailey, a Sergeant of the Guyana Police Force.
Detectives have taken DNA samples from Bailey and some of the dead woman’s close associates, in the hope of finding the perpetrators behind what they believe were her well-planned murder.
Crime Scene ranks also took DNA samples from a few beverage bottles that were on a table in the slain woman’s Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara house.
A source said that the beverage in one unopened bottle was still cold when the detectives visited the scene after the murdered woman was found.
While this may be one key link to the identity of the killer(s), it will take some time before the results are obtained.
“Normally these results take a long time, but we are going ahead with some other evidence that we have gathered so far,” a senior police official told Kaieteur News last evening.
Investigators had also collected fingerprints from the dead woman’s car which was discovered abandoned on the East Coast of Demerara, hours after her body was found.
Although the woman’s house was fitted with a high level security system, including surveillance cameras, detectives are still unable to ascertain what transpired between the hours that Ramnaress was last seen alive and when her body was discovered.
From the evidence, the killer(s) was smart enough to remove the entire device that stored footage from the cameras.
While investigators found signs of forced entry at the woman’s house, they still suspect that the perpetrator(s) was known to her.
“Whoever did it, tried to destroy all the evidence by trying to burn the place down,” the source stated.
It was the smoke from the attempted fire that alerted persons to the house.
The dead woman’s reputed husband who was initially under suspicion is back at his job and continues to maintain his innocence.
He had urged investigators to try and obtain a back-up of the camera footage from the surveillance cameras, but so far they have been unable to do so.
The source said that investigators are not focusing on one individual and suggested that the identity of the woman’s killers may come as a surprise to some if the case is solved.
A senior police official had expressed optimism earlier that investigators were making progress.
However, it’s been close to a month and investigators are no closer to solving the puzzle than they were two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, investigators in the same division are still awaiting the surrender of Rondy Jagdeo, the suspect in the murder of Eccles biker Kirk Davis, who was recently spotted in neighbouring Suriname.
Davis was riddled with 16 bullets, four days after the Diamond murder, sending tremors through the minds of city residents who still fear that a crime wave is in progress.
Police are also pinning their hopes that law enforcement officials in Suriname will apprehend the suspect should he refuse to surrender.
Commissioner of Police (ag), Leroy Brumell had disclosed almost two weeks ago that his Force is actively soliciting the help of Surinamese counterparts to “bring justice and closure to one of the 92 murder cases that occurred this year”.
Brumell at a press conference to brief the nation on his recent trip to Suriname with Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee and other leading security officials, said that the Guyana police force had provided information on the suspect to their counterparts in the neighbouring Dutch-speaking Republic.
The suspect’s girlfriend, who was reportedly wounded during the incident, although she claimed that she was shot during a robbery, was briefly detained by police after her discharge from hospital.
However she has reportedly declined to give a statement to the police.
