Police have begun a hunt for five heavily armed men who were dressed in military outfits and wearing
bulletproof vests. The unknown men had carried out a series of robberies at sea, including one on five fishermen whom they abandoned and tied to their 2,500lb seine, at sea, three miles outside the mouth of Moruka Saturday night
Satyanand Persaud, the owner of “Sunny”, the vessel that was attacked Saturday, relating the incident as told to him by his five workers who are currently resting at home after the horrifying incident, said that after his workers were rescued by Coast Guards he learnt that his boat “Sunny” and the 48 horsepower Yamaha engine were carted away by the heavily armed men.
He said that the attackers had first fired warning shots at his men, before ordering them to remove the attached engine from the boat.
But Persaud’s workers encountered difficulty removing the engine, which was securely attached to the boat. This led to the pirated taking boat and engine.
After carrying out the act, Persaud said, the armed men proceeded to tie his workers to his 2,500lb seine which was at the time set in the sea.
Police at the Charity outpost were informed and the ranks found a boat which was allegedly used to carry out the piracy act, moored at the Charity wharf.
Persaud said his boat is almost one and a half years old and it cost almost 2.5M dollars. At the time of the attack it had a large quantity of fish.
The owner of the boat believed to have been used to carry out the act was questioned by both the police and Coast Guards. The man, who claim that he is from Moruka, Region One said his engine was stolen by robbers at sea.
