On a high after their 120-run victory against Essequibo, defending champs Demerara will start as favorites in their second Pepsi Inter-County 50-over cricket fixture against Berbice which bowls off at the GCC ground Bourda today
from 09:15 hrs.
Skipper Chris Barnwell led the Demerara charge with a pugnacious 101, while Trevon Griffith (48), Zaheer Mohamed (49) and Rajendra Chandrika (39) supported with the bat on a slow track as the home team reached 322-8 against Essequibo to take two bonus points for scoring over 300 runs.
Steven Jacobs, Robin Bacchus, Derwin Christian and Andrew Lyght Jr, who could come into the side today, are expected to offer support to the others with the bat for Demerara.
Left-arm pacer Andre Stoll and Paul Wintz should share the new ball, while Barnwell will offer fast bowling back up. Spinners Jacobs, Mohamed, Griffith and leg-spinner Amir Khan should do the bulk of the bowling in what should be sweltering heat.
Former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon has been named Berbice Captain with former West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo his deputy.
Also in the Berbice squad are the two recent West Indies Under-19 selectees, Shimron Hetmyer and Gudakesh Motie, who are scheduled to join a W.I.C.B camp on Wednesday.
Even without Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin and Veerasammy Permaul who are unavailable due to West Indies ‘A’ team duties, the Berbice batting is strong with Chattergoon and Anthony Bramble expected
to open.
Shimron Hetmyer, Jonathan Foo, Anthony D’Anrade, Devon Clements, Eon Hooper, Rajiv Ivan, Bishoo and Joemal La Fleur could lend support to their Skipper on what should be a fast outfield.
Keon Joseph is genuinely quick while Bishoo, Clements, Ivan and Motie are the main spinners in the Berbice line-up.
Demerara Squad: Christopher Barnwell (Captain), Steven Jacobs (Vice Captain), Trevon Griffith, Robin Bacchus, Andrew Light Jr., Rajendra Chandrika, Shemroy Barrington, Derwin Christian, Zaheer Mohamed, Amir Khan, Andre Stoll, Paul Wintz, Kelon Carmichael, Shaquille Williams, (Coach) Orin Bailey, (Manager) Robert Adonis
Berbice squad: Sewnarine Chattergoon (Captain), Shimron Hetmyer, Devendra Bishoo (Vice Captain), Kandasammy Surujnarine, Jonathan Foo, Rajiv Ivan, Anthony Bramble (Wicket keeper), Anthony D’Andrade, Devon Clements, Joemal La Fleur, Romario Shepherd, Keon Joseph, Eon Hooper, Gudakesh Motie, (Manager) Albert Smith (Coach) Hubern Evan.
