A masterful display of power hitting and batsman ship by the Albion Cricket club pair of accomplished national players, in West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon and the pugnacious all-rounder Jonathan Foo, led Albion to 308 to record a demoralising 123 runs victory over Young Warriors in the final of the Inaugural Berbice Bridge Company First Division 50-over knockout cricket competition played on Sunday at the Cumberland Ground East Canje Berbice for teams in the Ancient county.
Winning the toss and electing to take first strike on the small ground
in front an appreciative crowd, Albion were on 34 for 2 in the ninth over before Foo joined opener Chattergoon to begin the (demolition job) Foo and Chattergoon show.
Foo, the right handed all-rounder, was back to his brutal best as he clobbered the bowling to all parts of the small ground in galloping to a quick fire145, which included five massive sixes and fourteen scorching boundaries. The left handed Chattergoon used his experienced and played the supporting role as he compiled a brilliant 102, blasting two sixes and seven scintillating fours in the interim. They blasted 217 in just 201 deliveries in their third wicket partnership batting from the ninth over to 42nd over. Young Warriors tried six bowlers before young left arm spinner Karanchand Ramnarine had Chattergoon caught behind at 251.
It was a gem to watch as the two entertained the crowd as the runs flowed freely. Their display was not only entertaining, but was a good warm up and an ominous warning to their opponents in the ongoing Inter County competition.
The partnership was so dominant that only Balchand Baldeo with 10 reached double figures as Albion galloped to 308 all out in 49 overs.
Bowling for Young Warriors Ramnarine had figures of five for 48, while medium pacer Suresh Dhanai and off spinner Linden Austin took two wickets each.
The home team began their chase after the mammoth target in earnest with the young and enterprising West Indies U-19 selectee Shimron Hetmyer giving them a brisk and encouraging start with four meaty sixes and three spanking fours in an entertaining 45 before he fell with the score on 46. He tried the aerial route too often and once he went Young Warriors struggled.
They could not keep up with the scoring rate, with Ishwar Singh 35(1×6, 2×4), Dhanai 26 not out (3×6, 1×4), Sean Hetmyer, who tried to hold the innings together with 28(1×4), Veteran Anil Beharry batting at number 11with 16(2×6) and Mortimer Fraser with 11(1×4) gave the home crowd something to shout about as their team fell for 185 off 37.5 overs to lose by the wide margin of 123 runs.
Bowling for the visitors West Indies U-19 selectee, left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai was in mesmerizing form with the ball, snaring 6 for 27 from 10 overs, while Baldeo picked up two and there were one apiece for captain Devendra Bishoo, Foo and Sharaz Ramcharran.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, BBCI representative Amaranth Singh in brief remarks thanked the BCB for organising a wonderful competition. He said that the company was very pleased with how the competition was organised and the mileage they got. He stated that his principals will definitely continue with their partnership in the future. He also congratulated the winning Albion team and thanked all the teams that took part in the competition.
Captain of the winning Albion team Devendra Bishoo congratulated all of his team mates and said that the club is in the habit of winning, noting that when the competition started that was their focus.
Executive member of the Berbice Cricket Board, Carl Moore, in remarks congratulated the winning Albion team and thanked the BBCI for coming on board and showing fate with the BCB in sponsoring the competition. He said that the competition was a success and allowed the board to showcase the talent of Berbice cricketers despite the poor weather which affected the competition that started in April.
Albion received $80,000 and the winning BBCI trophy, while Young Warriors collected $40,000 for their effort. Man of the match Foo pocketed $10,000 for his outstanding performance.
