Defending Mackeson-sponsored Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters Inter-Ward Basketball champions, Albouystown/Charlestown narrowly evaded Tucville/Guyhoc in a quarterfinal game Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Albouystown edged Tucville 56-55 to advance in the tournament. Collis Pluck scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Albouystown. Sheldon Frank and Marvin Hilliman each scored 11 points with three and seven rebounds respectively.
Earl O’Neil top-scored for Tucville/Guyhoc with 14 points and racked in 17 rebounds with three blocks, while Jason Squires and Keith Tute scored 15 and 10 points correspondingly in a good all round performance for the team that just fell short.
Shooting guard Frank in combination with Pluck combined to net 12 points in the first quarter.
Frank shot a very high percentage, nailing a three pointer to put his side ahead in the later minutes, but it was not enough to salvage a first quarter lead, trailing 16-17 at the end of the first period.
O’Neil dominated the paint with his lanky frame, lead the attack for the Tucville/Guyhoc side as he netted six points in the period with the half ending 32-30. Tucville/Guyhoc was held to a mere seven points in the pivotal third period as poor shot selection and robust defending hindered their efforts.
Albouystown/Charlestown went into the final period leading 42-39. The defending champs were then outscored 16-14 in the final period and withstood Tucville/Guyhoc’s, Ryan Melville heroics in the paint to eventually win the game.
Melville finished a three-point play with a layup while being fouled to haul his team within two points with 9.1 seconds left. However, Melville missed a crucial free-throw attempt as their time expired before Tucville/Guyhoc could get off a shot.
In the second quarterfinal, Alberttown/Bourda upset Melanie 71-61. Yannick December was the top scorer for the winners with 18 points while Olatunde Griffith and Yannick Dundas collected 16 points, five rebounds and 13 points, seven rebounds respectively.
Sherlon Legall had 14 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks for Melanie, while Haslyn Hooper and Curtley English scored 13 points, 20 rebounds and 12 points in that order. The first semi-final of the tournament was played last night.
