– amateur boxers put on show
By Edison Jefford
Hundreds flooded Amelia’s Ward Bus Park downtown in Linden Saturday night to witness an entertaining card in the Guyana Boxing Association’s Mackeson Fight Night, which definitely delivered a knockout punch to mesmerise patrons.
In one of the featured bouts of the night, Clairmont Gibson and Kevin Ting-A-Kee sent tongues wagging in a quality display of amateur boxing, though Gibson won all three rounds of the three-round Lightweight contest of the inaugural Mackeson event.
Ting-A-Kee became the clear crowd favourite after he landed a left jab to Gibson’s head, which floored him in the first round. But after the mandatory eight-count, Gibson was ready again and was much more active, obviously looking to regain points.
Gibson landed some lusty blows that included a few vicious right-hand combinations as Ting-A-Kee continued to work his jab, which seemed his more effective weapon. But, it was not enough to convince the judges since Gibson was landing heavy shots.
Of the three rounds, the third round looked more convincing for Gibson, who continually backed up Ting-A-Kee into a corner and literally made him a punching bag; this forced the referee to get involved with an eight-count to verify Ting-A-Kee’s consciousness.
Ting-A-Kee was allowed to continue and Gibson literally punished him on his way to a lopsided decision in one of two Lightweight fights. Stephan Gouveia won the other Lightweight bout with a unanimous decision against Anandram Dharamraj.
In another action-packed fight, Bert Braithwaite used his superior power and skill to dismantle a taller Kelon King in a Junior Welterweight fight.
Braithwaite won the jabbing and the punching contest unanimously after forcing a mandatory eight-count for a bewildered King in the last round. The formality followed a hard right hand that seemed to daze King.
Aquincy Ageday won the other Junior Welterweight bout after he forced Kurt Kendall to retire, following a first round brawl that put both boxers on the canvas once. Ageday, however, was the more relentless and eventually Kendall caved in for the night.
Trevon King won unanimously against William Hendricks, who had points taken away for bull-rushing King in a Middleweight dual; Marvin Ageday won the other fight in the category against Kevin Rodney also with a unanimous decision.
In the Welterweight Division, Eon Bancroft secured a lopsided decision against Clifton Grahame after Bancroft had also beaten Ron Smith in the first fight of the night. In the two Junior fights of the night, Teo Bumbury secured a split decision against Muntehel Johnson, while Joshua Corbin won unanimously against Kevon Mulling.
