The Guyana Power Light (GPL) Company unearthed 3000 feet of service wire from a scrap metal dealership located at Princes and Bishop Streets yesterday.
These wires include duplex and triplex service wires along with supplementary wiring used by the power company.
Reports reveal that GPL visited the dealership and discovered the wires. The police were called in to assist with its removal while charges are pending for the dealer.
On several occasions, people have removed copper wires from utility cables, which they sell on the scrap market. Several power poles across the city have seen thieves destroying and removing the earth cables causing the power company to grapple with extra costs to replace the fixtures.
GPL officials noted that the power company is now forced to shell out money to replace the copper cables. To prevent a recurrence, the power company is replacing the cables with aluminum ones.
After lobbying to Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, scrap metal dealers were allowed to partially export, but copper was banned. This ban was later lifted.
Theft of copper wire from utilities occurs primarily at substation transformers, utility poles or from the back of service trucks. The thefts have several adverse consequences, including the obvious economic impact service disruptions, and possibly personal injury or death for persons involved in the theft or subsequent recovery efforts. GPL says it is paying increasing attention to this growing problem and has begun to investigate and implement measures for deterring thefts, and protecting facilities.
