Athletics track being re laid
Appropriate Sporting facilities are one of the utmost requirements to produce
well rounded athletes. With this in mind, Kaieteur Sport has recently highlighted the state of a number of sporting facilities in Guyana, some of which are inappropriate. Recently the National Parks commission has commenced work to upgrade its respective sports venues.
Wednesday the Commissioner of the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), Damian Fernandes said that works on the athletics track, which is being re-laid, are going apace. He informed that they are currently raising the level of the land which will prevent flooding so that athletes will be able to use the facility throughout the year when completed. Fernandes stated that the projected is very costly and they are willing to accept assistance from individuals and business entities.
The Commissioner indicated that they are working hand in hand with the national Rugby Association to improve the Rugby field. “The level of the land here is very low so the first thing we have to do is to seal off the field so that it will not be flooded easily”, he added.
Fernandes said that there are also plans to raise the height of the Rugby as well as
the Hockey fields, but due to the high cost involved they have to take it step by step.
He indicated that the park is now open for longer periods due to the lights which were recently installed and they are looking at the possibility of setting up surveillance cameras which will help to facilitate longer training periods for athletes.
