– Fistic furies fires up tonight in Linden
By Edison Jefford
Calling all pugilists! If you think you have what it takes to be Guyana’s next top boxer, then put on your gloves and visit the Mackeson Fight Night, which will host its first of three Cards tonight at the Amelia’s Ward Bus Park in Linden.
The innovative and novel inaugural Mackeson Fight Night was launched yesterday with Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) President, Steve Ninvalle, identifying the sole reason for hosting the boxing challenge as a way of spotting new talent.
“This will be used to find untapped talent in the sport. This is definitely a shot in the arm for the amateur boxers and amateur boxing. Nothing like this has ever happened before,” Ninvalle stated at Ansa McAl Headquarters at Beterverwagting.
The boxing cards, which will also be held in Georgetown at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac on September 29 and New Amsterdam Stelling on October 5, will all be held outdoor, giving the boxers a platform to perform literally in the streets.
“We are taking boxing to the people. For instance, Linden has not seen amateur boxing in some time, thus this is a way of regaining the enthusiasm in those communities and spreading the sport on the whole,” Ninvalle continued in his remarks.
He thanked Mackeson for continuing its outstanding work with community-based sports and said that his boxing association will continue to work for the development of the sport. Ninvalle noted that it is such efforts that allow for meaningful development.
Mackeson Brand Coordinator, Jamaal Douglas indicated that the brand will maintain its thrust to get communities involved in sport. “We are once again engaging communities, and I can tell you that we will be doing this event annually,” Douglas informed.
The Cards will feature four boxers in four divisions, including Lightweight, Junior
Welterweight, Welterweight and Middleweight. Each fight will last for three rounds, and according to Ninvalle, the top boxers from the final will each be awarded vouchers.
Ninvalle said that the top emerging boxers will be properly rewarded. Technical Coordinator for the event, Terrence Poole informed that it is the first time Guyana will watch sanctioned amateur boxing, which promises loads of fistic fury, in the street.
The competition will be held under the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) rules and all technical boxing rules will apply. Ansa McAl Public Relations Officer (PRO), Darshanie Yussuf, informed that there was a medical screening process for fighters.
According to Yussuf, boxers will not just be tossed into the ring. She noted that they had to pass the relevant fitness tests and medicals before they take on the ‘square jungle’. However, what is sure is that Mackeson Fight Night promises to be action-packed.
