Magistrate Sunil Scarce refused bail to 23-year-old Shameer Mohamed, a hire car driver, of Lot 1 Riverstown Village, after he appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s court to answer a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The police reported that Mohammed, while under the influence of alcohol, drove HC1988 in a dangerous manner and caused the death of pedal cyclist, Lochanie Yaspaul.
Attorney-at-law Hemraji Rajkumar in his plea for bail stated that his client would not be a flight risk.
Scarce, however, refused to grant bail. Mohammed is scheduled to make another appearance on October 18.
Yaspaul, a mother of four, was on September18 last, killed on the Hibernia Public Road, after she was struck down from behind by a speeding car, driven by Mohamed, who was said to be under the influence of alcohol.
The businesswoman was at the time venturing to the backdam, on her bicycle to tend to her cattle.
One of Yaspaul’s feet was severed. Other injuries sustained included severe damage to her head and face.
