With the growing number of privately-owned food businesses operating mostly in the nights, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown has undertaken that operators comply with the standard requirements of the City Public Health Department.
According to the council in a press release, there has been a significant amount of new vendors operating in the city providing food and local beverages for sale for human consumption.
“While we appreciate the enterprising spirit of those individuals who are involved, we must caution that they must be properly equipped with the requisite food handler’s certificate.
The council also advised that those who purchase foods from the food carts and vendors, to ensure that those who are operating and selling them are honouring the requirements.
“They should be properly attired and their operations must have running water and allied appurtenances,” the release said.
The release further stated; that restaurants and food shops are to ensure that they have the appropriate grease trap system. Many restaurants and food places do not provide for this vital filter.
“As a result, fats from meats get into the surface and street drains and blocks those water ways. This in turn facilitates stagnant water which emits a foul smell within the neighbourhoods,” the release stated.
The council further noted that by this action a suitable environment for harmful bacteria is provided. This situation has implications to the public health of our local communities and the City as a whole.
The council is calling on restaurant owners to respect the regulations in the Municipal District and Council’s Act 28:01, their patrons and the environment by operating their business in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
Those who are desirous to find out more about the requirements to set up a food and restaurant operation can contact the Public Relations Division at telephone number: 225-2218.
