Secondary School Students and occupants of the Anna Regina Multilateral Dormitory, at Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast, were afforded the opportunity to participate in a series of activities that constitute celebrations in observation of Amerindian Heritage Month.
The students, most of whom are originally from far flung Interior locations, including Port Kaituma in the North West and from Amerindian communities in the Pomeroon River ,participated in traditional Amerindian dances, recited poems, modeled and performed dramatic pieces.
They also sampled a wide variety of Amerindian dishes.
The activity began with the recitation of prayers in “Akawaio” by a visiting teacher from Region Eight.
Karen Nurse, who performs duty of the dorms mother at the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School, said that it was her idea to include activities relating to celebrations that commemorate Amerindian Heritage month, especially for students at the dorm who could not venture home to their respected communities to observe the month’s event.
Nurse added that the occasion commenced two years ago and allowed students of the dormitory to feel included by being involved in those celebrations.
Almost 97 students are resident at the Anna Regina Dormitory.
Other activities billed for Amerindian Heritage Month will unfold in the new week in Amerindian Communities in the Essequibo District.
