Half centuries from West Indies Under-19 batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul and the talented Vishwanauth Ramlakhan, backed up by a fine bowling display from 16-year-old Satesh Jainarine guided host Enmore Community Centre Cricket Club (ECCCC) to a 40-run victory over St Cuthbert’s Mission in the return fixture last Sunday.
St Cuthbert’s Mission started the game with the psychological advantage having won the first encounter by 70 runs at home in March, but by the end of the day ECCCC were able to square the two-match friendly series with a respectable performance.
ECCCC batted first in front of a fair size crowd and posted a challenging 213-5 from the allotted 30 overs on a lightning fast outfield.
Opener Chanderpaul top scored with an attractive 85, while Ramlakhan supported well with a fluent 53 and Amir Khan chipped in with 24. All rounder Timothy Andrews claimed 2-28.
St Cuthbert’s Mission responded with 173-7 in 30 overs. Andrews and R. Daniels were the visitors leading batsmen with 28 each. Off-spinner Jainarine bagged 4-18.
At the presentation ceremony, Chanderpaul was voted best batsman, Jainarine best bowler, while Andrews also received a trophy for his all-round effort.
The ECCCC will be in action again on Sunday against Bravado in a 30-over game starting at 11:30 hours at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
The ECCCC squad reads; Bheemraj Ramkelawan (captain), Chaitram Ramlall, Sheik Mohamed, Javed Mohamed, Vishwanauth Ramlakhan, Ranjeet Hiralall, Nandram Ganesh, Satesh Jainarine, Jacob Persaud, Mark Persaud, Mark Malone, Navindra Gobin, Naresh Persaud, Safraz Ali and N. Basdeo.
Meanwhile, young cricketers of the ECCCC will be exposed to a training seminar today with former West Indies all-rounder and head coach and Guyana Amazon Warriors Roger Harper from 10:30 hours at the club.
After the session, the ECCCC will be involved in a tape ball game against Metro Office and Computer Supplies and a softball match against a Helena Over-40 team. Following those games, President Donald Ramotar and other government officials will formally hand over refurbished sections of the club to executives of the ECCCC.
The administration had spent millions of dollars to rebuild a pavilion, two sightscreens, commentary box, sections of the parameter fence and ticket booth. That ceremony is slated to start at 16:00 hours.
