Ball in Granger’s court
On the heels of an article that called for the Commissioner of Police (ag) Leroy Brumell to be substantially appointed, comes a government statement informing of the President’s registered intention to do just that.
It is now a few months short of two years since Brumell has been acting in the capacity of the Commissioner of Police. His appointment to act in that position came after a rape allegation was made against former Commissioner of Police, the late Henry Greene.
However, here of a late, the Opposition, more specifically, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has been making calls for Brumell to be substantially appointed to the post he has so long been acting in. This call comes at a time that is fast approaching resemblance of the crime wave.
One of the most dominant voices in APNU as it relates to the aforementioned call is former Commissioner of police, Winston Felix.
As recent as yesterday, this newspaper carried an article that gave prominence to Felix’s opinions on the matter at hand. This article has pushed the President to disclose his moves made to confirm Brumell to his position.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) sent out a release yesterday noting Felix’s “seeming demand that Mr. Brumell be appointed forthwith.”
The release further stated that President Donald Ramotar, had on September 2, written to Opposition Leader, David Granger (Brigadier ret’d) inviting him to a constitutionally mandated consultation to discuss the appointment of the Commissioner of Police.
The letter alluded to President Ramotar’s intention to substantially appoint Mr. Brumell as the Commissioner of Police.
“GINA therefore finds it difficult to understand the context and the possible motive of Mr. Felix’s comments regarding the said matter. GINA hopes that this release is useful and would serve to enlighten Mr. Felix and the general public.”
