A Corentyne woman, Meenawattie Pooranauth, called “Tickly”, 47 formerly of 123 John’s Housing Scheme, Corentyne, and of Williamsburg, Corentyne, was on Thursday evening struck dead by a speeding car on the Williamsburg Public Road.
According to police the accident occurred around 18:30 hrs.
The badly injured woman was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where she succumbed whilst awaiting an ambulance to transport her to seek further attention at New Amsterdam hospital.
According to a police press release, the woman attempted to cross the road and was struck down by the car bearing licence plate number HC 1727.
According to an eye witness he was on his way home when the car passed him with a speed. He barely jumped out of the way. About the same time he heard a loud noise as the car crashed into Pooranauth. The woman, the eye witness said, landed on the bonnet before crashing onto the road.
The woman was picked up by public spirited citizens and rushed to the Port Mourant hospital.
According to her relatives, they were at home when they got the message. They hurried to the Port Mourant hospital where Pooranauth was being treated. She had visible injuries about her body and was bleeding from her ears, nose, and mouth. Her head was bandaged and they were told that she was being prepared to be taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for an X-ray and further treatment. However she died before the ambulance arrived. The woman who was living at Williamsburg in a common law relationship leaves to mourn her mother and four siblings.
It is understood that the driver who appeared to be under the influence was arrested and is in custody. A post mortem examination is expected to be performed shortly.
Investigations are continuing.
