A mother of five was remanded to prison by Magistrate Clive Nurse who presides at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, for failing to produce her son to the court on Monday last.
The woman, Pansy Shepherd, of Wales, West Bank Demerara, was given responsibility to ensure that her son, who was before the court after being charged with a criminal offense, attended court as instructed by the said Magistrate.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman’s son who was released into her custody by Magistrate Nurse has reportedly fled into the interior.
The woman turned up in court on Monday last to inform the Magistrate of this development but was promptly remanded to prison. She is currently being held at the Den Amstel Police Station.
It is not clear how long she has been detained for, and when contacted by this newspaper, Magistrate Nurse declined to comment on the matter. He said, “I will not speak about this case.”
As three young children are now left unattended, worried neighbours of the detained woman have expressed concern about the three young children that are now without the supervision or guidance of a relative.
One resident said, “Is three children in de house. One of the children ain’t start nursery school yet; one ain’t even write common entrance yet and her other boy child is just 13 years old. These children need their mother. She is innocent. Shepherd has never been in trouble before. How could she be locked up if her son get away?
“Plus she has two young girl children in that house and you know what could happen. They can be taken advantage of. They need their mother and we hope the relevant authorities can look into this matter.”
