Upsets marked the opening of this year’s second edition of the Trophy Stall Regulation Basketball Championships, as the lesser-known clubs fashioned unlikely wins against their higher-ranked opponents last weekend at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
In the biggest upset yet at these Championships, the seventh-ranked Block 22 Flames, in this eight-team tournament, scored a huge upset win when they roasted the Kashif and Shanghai Kings 55-38 on Sunday, while on the previous day, the Bankers Trust Falcons returned to competitive basketball after over ten years, with a staggering 63-55 win over the second-rated Amelia’s Ward Jets. Retrieve Raiders also held off the charging Half Mile Bulls 65-64 in another encounter. The Championship continued with two more games last evening.
Kings, a prohibitive favourite to beat the Flames at this level came up short against the battling Flames, which was led by the young guns Selwyn Noble and Kerwin Williams who inspired them to this notable win.
The Kings were off to a flying start leading 10-0 before the Flames registered their first points, and when the whistle was blown for the end of the first quarter, Kings led 13-4. This pattern continued to the conclusion of the second quarter with the Kings in control, or so it looked, with them ahead 25-21.
But the second quarter exchanges showed that the Flames were serious in challenging the Kings and in a great display of competitive basketball, Flames were able to tie things up at 33 when the third quarter finished.
Going for broke the Flames were determined to make the best of their chances and contested every shot as they crashed the ‘board’ against a Kings line-up that withered under the pressure as the Flames rallied to a convincing win in the end.
Noble had 13 points and Williams 11 for the winners while the Kings best scorer was Orin Rise with a game high 14 points.
The Raiders came from behind to win as they showed poise in their end game. In the end, Raiders had the experienced Neil Marks steering their side before their lesser-known players, who had shown potential over the years, stepped up while Marks got a breather mostly in the final period to seal an unlikely win.
The resilience of the Raiders showed when Dauwin Lovell first sent them ahead 62-61. As the Bulls responded they regained the lead through their leader Michael Turner 63-62.Then Raiders’ centre, Omar Sam had knotted the scores at 63, the Bulls key scorer, Keon Cameron missed two shots from the line, which could have sent his team into the lead with 50.5 seconds left.
Sam was there to send his team up with a crucial basket in the paint and as the Bulls attacked the basket, they got three more shots from the line, but only scoring one as the Raiders sealed their come from behind win as Marks led with 21 points and was given support from Sam with 11 and Larose with eight.
Turner was the best scorer for the Bulls with 17 points while Keon Cameron got nine, Terron Welch eight and Travin Dryden seven in a losing cause.
In the feature game between the two Amelia’s Ward teams, the Falcons were out first, taking the lead at the end of the first quarter 14-9 and at half time 24- 20. The first half had revealed that the Jets would have to come strong if they were to beat this energized falcons unit and with experienced Allister Webster eventually deciding to play the Jets were able to snatch the lead at the end of the pivotal third quarter 43-41.
The Falcons had secured the acquisitions of former Jets players Lawrence ‘Bolo’ DaCosta, Devon Thompson and Leonard Caleb along with Kwakwani’s Dale Sauers and the Kings’ Thornton Wilson and this proved important to their game plan.
DaCosta was key with a three point shot and a three point play early in the game as the Falcons were up 24-14 and Caleb started the response by the Falcons after they were down 45-41 in the fourth quarter as they battled back in a 18-9 run to eventually lead 59-54 with just under five minutes remaining in the game.
From that recovery the Jets never got their game on course and eventually lost with the Falcons flying home winners 63-55 in the end.
DaCosta had a game high 14 points as Sauers got 10 while Thompson netted nine and Wilson eight for the falcons. The Jets top scorers were Javon Nelson with 12 and Shane Webster had 10 while their captain Kevin Joseph added nine for the losers.
